Last week, I had a visit from my old friend, Dr. Wanjau. I always refer to him by his last name because everyone I know does.

I have been mentoring Dr. Wanjau about starting and running a successful business from home, and his visit was a follow-up to a previous meeting.

Dr. Wanjau knows that I have always been self-employed for as long as he has known me, and finally got the courage to ask me what I did for a living. I simply told him “I had a business on the internet”. Since we were at a party, we agreed to hook up later so I’d tell him more.

His enthusiasm made me commit to mentor him for free until he was making a comfortable living from home. Don’t get me wrong, as a practising doctor he gets paid very well, but he has a desire to have control of his time and enjoy a good living with his family.

After the first meeting, we’ve had several phone conversations. I’d promise to send him some information via email in each of those conversations. But I’d always notice he did not read my email every time we talked because he seemed to have no information about it.

So last week when he came home, I had printed all the emails I’d sent him so he could go do his homework. On seeing the emails, he verified the email address was indeed correct.

“How did you do that?” I asked.

“Just by clicking on the “This is Spam” button in my email”.

Unknown to him until now, he could no longer receive any email from me because he thought my message was spam when he received it and went ahead to click the button.

I call this the button of death.
